Before Christmas break, we worked really hard on addition. This week, when the kids came back, we began subtraction. Since the kids have been tested like crazy this week... MAP~ Reading & testing for report cards... I decided to let them work on a fun activity today to practice subtraction. It turned out pretty cute too!
Here is an example of one of the boys:
If you can't see the writing it says, "My snowman had 3 buttons and 2 fell off. How many are left? 3-2=1"
And here is one of the girls.
I gave them three buttons and they had to come up with a subtraction sentence of how many buttons fell off the snowman. This activity also provided cutting practice and writing practice as we reviewed some of our sight words.

I used this to assess whether students could match the picture to the story.
